Optimal manufacturing-remanufacturing policies in a lean production environment
نویسندگان
چکیده
This study analyses a production-management model that considers the possibility of implementing a reverse-logistics system for remanufacturing end-of-life products in a lean production environment (as opposed to models that use EOQ approaches). Decision variables are identified (including manufacturing and remanufacturing capacities and return rates and use rates for end-oflife products) and optimal policies are determined. Moreover, the structure of these optimal policies is analysed. The conclusion drawn is that, in many realistic scenarios, mixed policies (that is, with return rates and use rates strictly between 0 and 1) can be optimal. This conclusion is contrary to results published in earlier studies, which are based on more restrictive assumptions.

Remanufacturing: Challenges and Opportunities to be Lean
The lean philosophy, which denotes business excellence through continuous improvement, originates from Japanese car manufacturer Toyota’s Production System (TPS). An area where lean is not fully explored is remanufacturing, a business that brings used products back to useful life. Remanufacturing is often a more complex process than manufacturing due to uncertainty of process steps/time and par...

This work applies fuzzy sets to the integration of purchasing, manufacturing and assembling of production planning decisions with multiple suppliers, multiple components and multiple machines in remanufacturing systems. The developed fuzzy multi-objective linear programming model (FMOLP) simultaneously minimizes total costs, total $text{CO}_2$ emissions and total lead time with reference to cus...
متن کاملCoordination of manufacturing, remanufacturing and returns acceptance in hybrid manufacturing/remanufacturing systems
This paper deals with the coordination of manufacturing, remanufacturing and returns acceptance control in a hybrid production-inventory system. We use a queuing control framework, where manufacturing and remanufacturing are modelled by single servers with exponentially distributed processing times. Customer demand and returned products arrive in the system according to independent Poisson proc...

متن کاملSimple heuristics for push and pull remanufacturing policies
Inventory policies for joint remanufacturing and manufacturing have recently received much attention. Most efforts, though, were related to (optimal) policy structures and numerical optimization, rather than closed form expressions for calculating near optimal policy parameters. The focus of this paper is on the latter. We analyze an inventory system with unit product returns and demands where ...
